You’ve probably heard people talk about mindset in the same way that you’ve heard people talk about the importance of a positive attitude.
The exact definition can differ from person to person, but as a general rule, when you embrace a more positive mindset, you increase the amount of happiness and success in your life.
The ability to develop a more positive mindset will typically make you much more successful in both business and life.
That’s why you should dedicate some time to examining your beliefs and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone if you want to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be.
The truth of the matter is that if you change your mind set, you change your life.
This is the one thing that every single mindfulness guru agrees upon.
When you think positive thoughts, when you practice gratitude and develop a true growth mindset, you’ll start to find that good things happen to you when you least expect them.
Let’s take a closer look at how and why to have an abundance mindset in life and business.
We Were Taught As Children To Have A Scarcity Mindset
As children, we learn about scarcity from a young age.
It doesn’t take us long to understand that everything comes to an end eventually. This doesn’t mean that we need to bow down to negative thoughts – it just means accepting that we live in a world of limited resources.
This doesn’t mean that we should live in fear, though. We just need to understand what a scarcity mindset is and why we have them to begin with.
The truth is that we evolved these beliefs when we were living in caves and relying on hunting and gathering for our next meal.
We were taught that most things come to an end and that there wasn’t ever enough for everyone.
Another limiting belief that many business owners have is there isn't enough business or customers to go around for everyone.
When in fact, there are more than enough people to support all of our businesses in throughout world.
We just have to find our people and start looking through a lens of abundance instead of being in a scarcity mindset.
What Is A Scarcity Mindset?
A scarcity mindset is a form of negative thoughts in which our minds behave differently because we fear that we have too few resources to achieve our goals.
Whether you’re trying to improve your life or whether you’re trying to build a business, a lack of resources does much more than hold us back physically. It can also have an effect on our thinking.
The good news is that scarcity has an upside, and indeed if you learn to be grateful for what you have instead of harboring thoughts of jealousy and dissatisfaction, you’ll be doing your bit to create abundance.
Scarcity can also lead to productivity.
For example, as time runs out and a deadline approaches, we tend to focus on what we’re doing. Sometimes it takes us getting outside of our comfort zone for us to do our best work.
When we have a scarcity mindset, we also tend to look through a lens of competition.
When scarcity affects the ways that we live our life, we start to realize that there’s not always enough to go around. The laws of supply and demand that we’re used to in business apply equally to any scarce type of resources.
What Is An Abundance Mindset?
The idea of an abundance mindset was first championed by Stephen Covey, the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. You might also have heard of Stephen Covey because he was a successful businessman and lecturer.
His ideas on wealth and ways of thinking can be adapted to suit all areas of life and business, whether we’re talking about relationships or making money.
The idea behind developing an abundance mentality is to forget that old school “survival of the fittest” way of thinking and to operate on the basis that there’s enough to go around.
Success in life isn’t a binary thing, and just because one person is successful, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful, too.
In his book, Covey suggests a number of different positive habits that we can all use to generate more opportunities, ranging from being proactive to beginning with the end in mind and putting the first things first.
Each of these ways has been tried and tested and they’re worth familiarizing yourself with if you get the chance, although we won’t be needing them for the purposes of this post.
The best thing about the decision to embrace this new mindset is that it’s a gift that keeps on giving. You can cultivate and create abundance, and this can set you on the path towards financial freedom.
It can help you to achieve your goals, improve your quality of living and ultimately lead you towards the happiness that you deserve.
Why make the shift? What is the power of positivity?
By now, you should have a good idea of the opportunities and the benefits of positive thinking and an abundance mindset.
Now, it falls to you to cultivate a more positive mindset of your own. But why should we make that shift in the first place?
Positive thoughts are powerful.
In the same way that simply smiling in a stressful situation can help you to reduce stress and potentially even to live longer, thinking positive thoughts can help you to realize your goals and to ultimately become a success at whatever you put your mind to.
Positive people spread their goodwill and bring positivity to other people. In fact, both positive and negative thoughts are contagious, and it’s important to remember this if you want to make friends and influence people, to coin a phrase from Dale Carnegie.
They say that we’re all effectively a composite of the people we have the closest relationships with, which is why many personal finance gurus advocate for spending time with people with wealth if you want to follow in their footsteps.
But how can we embrace positive habits when it often feels as though the world is crumbling around us?
Norman Vinvent Peale, the author of The Power of Positive Thinking, says, “The way to happiness: Keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, expect little, give much. Scatter sunshine, forget self, think of others. Try this for a week and you will be surprised.”
This all relates back to our business and the way in which we’re living because the way we look at the world will have a big impact on the way we experience it.
In other words, if we’re ruled by a feeling of fear then we’re going to struggle to take the opportunities that are presented to us.
If we’re ruled by a growth mindset, we’ll start to grow both personally and professionally. And we might not even notice that we’re doing it.
How Does An Abundance Mindset Help Your Business?
This is the big question, and it doesn’t have an easy answer because when you think positive thoughts, you’ll start to see effects and improvements across the entirety of your business and your life.
It’s a bit like asking how having experience helps in the creative industry – it simply means that you have the right foundations in place to deal with any situation that might arise.
Just a few of the main benefits of having an abundance mindset include:
You Will Have More Clarity In Your Personal Life & Business
There are limited reasons to avoid an abundance mindset and a whole heap of reasons to give it a go.
One of the biggest opportunities of this kind of mindset is the fact that you get greater clarity on what you’re trying to achieve.
You can feel this benefit whether you’re trying to express gratitude, to learn or to take advantage of more opportunities with fewer resources.
Ultimately, if you want to be able to do more with less, it makes a lot of sense to develop an abundance mindset.
You Will Have A Positive Energy Shift
This can sound a little wishy-washy and it’s true that it’s difficult to measure, but you shouldn’t underestimate the power of a little positivity.
A shift in energy to focus on more positive thinking, perhaps by using a gratitude journal or getting a handle on your personal finance instead of just leaving your debts to accumulate, can make a huge difference.
Positive thoughts go a long ways towards creating opportunities and allowing you to build a better life.
You Have Less Negative Thoughts
Toxic thoughts act against us, compromising your attempt to gain financial independence or causing negativity to seep into your entries in your gratitude journal.
The more you give into that feeling of toxicity and negativity, the more likely it is that your life will head in unexpected directions.
Plus, if your mind is full of toxic thoughts then there’s no room for positivity.
You Stop Doing Things Based On Fear
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, developing an abundance mindset means that you’ll let go of the fear which has been holding you back and stopping you from getting things done.
It unlocks new opportunities, allows you to make the most of scant resources and ultimately stops you from holding yourself back for no good reason.
Next Steps
By now, you should understand the value of an abundance mindset and be committed to banishing fear from your life.
You should be ready to take your first steps towards financial independence and understand the limited reasons that there are for sticking with your old scarcity mindset. In fact, you should have a financial plan in place and a making money mindset that you’ll use to make your dreams a reality.
Now it’s over to you so that you can grow as a person, learn new skills and ways of thinking, and ultimately change your life for the better.
Remember to focus on one thing at a time instead of spreading yourself and your resources too thin. In the same way that it’s easier to learn one thing at a time than it is to learn a dozen things at once, focusing on one goal at a time helps to sharpen the mind and to focus your thinking on a single thing.
We can’t reach our full potential if we only give small amounts of our attention to a bunch of different things.
Imagine instead what you could achieve if you put all of your energy and focus on one thing and one thing only. It means that we can make sure that the one thing is amazing before we’re ready to move on to something else.
Now that you have all of that down and you’ve been able to learn new ways of thinking, you’re ready to revisit your life and work and to make some changes for the better.
If you haven’t already, practice positive thinking and try to embrace an abundance mindset. Then use that to identify the steps you need to take to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you need to be.
Other than that, it’s over to you! We want to hear how adopting an abundance mindset has helped you to double down and focus in your life and to make the most of the resources that you have available to you.
We’d love to hear what’s worked for you so that we can all learn from each other and each become the best people that we can be. Good luck – and remember to be positive.
