When it comes to developing backlinks for your website, it takes time, hard work and dedication. Backlinks help websites increase their search traffic and rankings on search engines.
However, only high-quality backlinks will generate the best SEO results and actually increase your website traffic.
In this blog post, we will go over what is , the ways to increase high- to your content, and list four tactics that you can implement right now to increase the number of visitors to your website.
First, let's go over the basics.
What Is A Backlink?
A backlink is created when a website links to another website. Backlinks are also called "inbound links" or "incoming links."
In other words, a website could link to any of your content. Whether that is a blog post, service page, infographic, or any page on your website. However, all backlinks are not created equally.
There are two different types of backlinks:
- Do-Follow Backlinks
- No-Follow Backlinks
Dofollow links allow Google, or whatever search engine is being used, to follow them and reach your website.
Why Are Backlinks Important?
Backlinks are important for businesses, search engines and users in a few various ways. One of the main reasons building backlinks is important is because good backlinks greatly impact search engine optimization (SEO) and your overall search engine ranking.
Before we dive deeper, let's go over this again:
Or look at it this way: 1 link from a high-quality website like the New York Times is worth more than a link from 50 blogs you’ve never heard of.
The number of backlinks you acquire isn't the answer to better SEO. But, the quality of backlinks is what has been proven to get you better SERP and SEO.
But why is SEO important for your business?
Google brings the average website 50% of their total online traffic, whether that's paid or organic traffic.
Backlinks help search engines determine how authoritative and relevant your website is on the specific topic you rank for. When other websites link to your website or content piece it helps show the search engines that your content is worth endorsing and is creditable, which has been proven to help businesses rank higher on the first page of the search engines.
The more high-quality websites that link back to your content will 100% increase the amount of traffic and visitors to your blog and content for free. By increasing the amount of visitors to your content, you also increase your amount of ROI and passive income.
Another reason you should add backlinks to your content is for the end user. Including backlinks can help users easily view content related to a topic without ever having to leave your blog. Backlinks can show readers that your blog or piece of content as authoritative and creditable.
Optimize Your Content For Backlinks
Before you try and get a number of backlinks from quality websites to link back to your content, make sure your content and website is ready for an influx of new visitors. When other websites link to your content, your website will see an increase in visitors and each one of those new visitors should be considered a new opportunity to grow your business.
When writing content, you want to write content with a purpose.
This means every single piece of content you create should be created to:
- Build your contact database.
- Create a warm audience - warm up the person or audience.
- Help push them through your sales funnel.
- Complete a call-to-action (CTA) or become a customer.
How To Generate Backlinks & More Visitors To Your Website
There are a few practices marketers use to increase their SEO, rankings and backlinks to their website. The one common effort is consistency and dedication - generating backlinks takes time.
Here are a few tips to begin building backlinks to your website.
1. Create High-Quality Content
Content creation is one of the most important aspects of any business. When creating content, remember to write content that is easily shareable amongst various platforms. You want to create ways that a business could link to your content or share it across social media.
When you rank high on the first page of search results, other websites are more likely to link back to your content. To make sure you stay on the top of the search results page, create in-depth, high-quality articles.
High-quality Content Consists Of These Factors:
- Lengthy, in-depth content pieces (1,000 words or more)
- A variety of keywords (this is great for short pieces)
- Up to date content
- A great meta description
- High-quality images (make sure to update the alt text)
- High-quality links
- Internal links linking back to your own content (create a web of links between your content)
- Social sharing buttons
- Call-to-actions (CTAs) in your content and on your website
- Content and website is mobile friendly
- No broken links

2. Be Consistent
Consistency is key to really growing your business and getting your business out there for the world to see.
Over the past year, our company has worked on creating more content for our ideal people to read and interact with. Once we started to consistently create content on a weekly basis, we saw a huge increase of traffic and new visitors to our website.
Here is a chart displaying the amount of monthly visitors to the DigitalMarketing.org website each month.
We started consistently writing content back in November of 2017 - this consisted of at least one new blog post a week.
You can see in September 2017, we had less than 2,500 visitors to our website. We had 15,000 people read our content in January 2019. This shows how writing new content on a consistent basis will increase the amount of people to your website and content.
Creating new content all of the time will also increase the amount of people who will share and link back to your website and blogs.
3. Create Shareable Content
Creating shareable content is critical to gaining backlinks. Shareable content creates an opportunity for you to gain thousands of followers, earn new referral traffic and gain high-quality links to help boost your domain authority - giving you that boost to rank higher in search engines.
Our emotional responses to content can play a massive role in whether or not we choose to share that content with others.
Content that sparks an emotion with someone or creates some type of feeling (happy, loved, sad, angry, etc) are the pieces that have the opportunity to be shared the most. The key here is to be inspirational - or at least funny.
Types of content that are easily shareable:
- Lists - 22.45% of all lists will go viral
- Videos - 18.94% of all shares
- How - to posts - 18.42% of all shares
- "What" articles - earned 17.88% of shares
- Infographics - 17.94 of all shares
4. Optimize For The Right Keywords
Keywords are super important when it comes to better SEO. The success of your organic traffic can depend on how well you are at researching and discovering the right keywords for your website.
When you use the right keywords in your content, your website traffic, leads, contacts and sales will increase and grow at a steady pace.
Once you find the popular keywords for your business, it is important to repetitively use them in every part of your content. You want to incorporate these keywords into headings, URLs, titles, subtitles, etc.
Here are some benefits of keyword optimization:
- Drive more qualified traffic to your website
- Better understand what your people are searching for
- Rank higher in the search engines
- Your ideal people and/or target audience can find your business easier and quicker
- More ROI
- Increased size in your email list
- An influx of new contacts that are interested in your business/product(s)
- Other websites and people will link to your content = more backlinks
There are a few different ways you can research and discover what keywords are right for your business. One of my favorite tools to use for keyword optimization is ahrefs and Wordstream (their tool is free).
