How To Start A Clubhouse Room

Clubhouse rooms are hot right now and one of the best places to learn your voice, grow your brand and connect with brilliant entrepreneurs like Elon Musk or Jenna Kutcher.

The Clubhouse app has a few options when it comes to starting a Clubhouse room. You can open a spontaneous room or schedule a Clubhouse event.

If you choose to spin up a room, there are three types of rooms available.

Types of Clubhouse rooms:

  1. Open room

  2. Social room

  3. Closed room

 

How to start a room on Clubhouse app

 

An open room is a Clubhouse room that is open to the public.

Meaning anyone on Clubhouse can find and enter your Clubhouse room in the hallway as long as it is active.

How to create an open room on Clubhouse:

  1. Open Clubhouse App

  2. Click 'Start a room' at the bottom of the screen 

  3. Click 'Open'

  4. Add a topic if you choose!

  5. Click 'Let's go'

Social rooms on Clubhouse are for trusted conversations with the people the moderators follow. And closed rooms are rooms for select people you choose to have a private conversation with on the platform. 

If you start a closed room, take note that you also have the option to open up this room up to the public.

That option is what makes a closed room a great way to get started and test out the waters before you are the primary host and moderator of a new clubhouse room.

You never know if your room will get flooded with people immediately after you launch it.

It's essential to be prepared for your Clubhouse room and know you can handle going on the fly.

You never want to mess up an opportunity and not be ready or prepared for a Clubhouse room.

How To Schedule A Clubhouse Event

When you go to schedule an event in Clubhouse, it's pretty simple.

You can see the upcoming events in your Clubhouse app at any point and time. Clubhouse lists the next three upcoming events.

To see your upcoming events, open the Clubhouse app and look at the top of your hallway.

Now, let's go into how to create an event in Clubhouse.

How to schedule an event on Clubhouse: 

  1. Open the Clubhouse app

  2. Click the calendar icon at the top of your hallway

  3. Click the calendar icon again (notice this time it has a + next to it)

  4. Add event details - name, date, co-host, time, description

  5. Hit Publish!

If you add a co-host, make sure you have their permission first. You never want to put someone else's name on your event unless it is okay with them.

Once you create your Clubhouse event, you can:

  • Share your event directly to other people or social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram

  • Copy the link to send to anyone, anytime
  • Add your event to Google Calendar or Apple Calendar

  • Delete your event at any time

And once you have created your Clubhouse event here is how you can find it.

Tap on the calendar icon at the top of the screen and tap the 'Upcoming for You' menu. Choose 'My Events' from the pop-up menu to see all of the events you've scheduled.

Now let's go over what a moderator is and the different roles of a moderator.

What Is A Clubhouse Moderator? 

Clubhouse moderator is someone who has the green star under their name at the top of a Clubhouse room. Since the app has launched, many people have started calling the moderator badge the green bean.

A moderator is considered the creator of the room and is responsible for hosting a safe environment.

A moderator has the authority to bring other people from the audience up to the stage and allow them to join your conversation.

It's important to remember when you give a speaker the moderator badge, they now have the same power as you.

Meaning they can invite and mod other speakers as well as end your Clubhouse room at any time.

So be mindful of who you give the moderator badge to and make sure it is people who are going to represent you and your stage well.

What else can a moderator on Clubhouse do?

  • Invite other people to speak on stage

  • Give out the moderator badge to anyone

  • Shutdown your Clubhouse room

  • Guide and protect the energy of the room
  • Mute anyone on stage

  • Can speak anytime

  • Applaud (clap mic on and off)

  • Can remove people from stage

You can also appoint a lead or a paid pro moderator. Paid pro moderators are people who get paid to moderate Clubhouse rooms for influencers and creators. 

These people host and hold the space for the room's creator so the conversation and experience can keep going.

The paid moderator will often promote their products and services like books or courses for them while the room's creator has to step out. 

Some people do not like those types of rooms at all, and that is perfectly fine.

The point of Clubhouse is to curate the best Clubhouse experience for you. 

13 Tips To Moderate A Clubhouse Room Like A Pro

1. Invite Other Moderators + Speakers To Speak

Anytime you create a Clubhouse room, it's pretty essential to have other people join your room. The more you can host engaging conversations on the app, the better you will do on the platform.

And Clubhouse greatly rewards people when they use their voice on the app.

One of the quickest ways to grow a large clubhouse audience is to add other moderators to your panel or stage -- especially if you can add other highly respected people and Clubhouse influencers to your stage.

When you are looking for speakers for your Clubhouse room, make sure you create a diverse set of speakers.

Look for people of a different race, background, success level, and perspectives.

Some of the top influencers on Clubhouse are consistently getting hundreds and sometimes thousands of people to show up to their rooms.

They are also successful at getting their audience to follow them to their other social media platforms when they have the proper monetization funnels setup.

  1. Find a person in the audience you want to invite up to speak

  2. Click on their Clubhouse photo in the audience

  3. Click 'Invite to speak' (now they will be a speaker on stage)

  4. Click on their Clubhouse photo again while they are on stage

  5. Click 'Make a moderator'

Look for any bios in the audience that stand out to you or provide a cool perspective that you haven't heard yet.

When you bring people into the platform and send out Clubhouse invites, Clubhouse greatly rewards you. Clubhouse wants new people consistently joining the app, and when you get new people in, it allows you to capture a brand new audience. 

It's a win-win for everyone involved. 

Remember, more moderators on stage does not mean your room will have hundreds or thousands of people show up. Sometimes you have to start slow before a ton of people who up.

Ensure you have quality people who can add value to your topic and room, and be careful not to overwhelm your stage with too many speakers.

2. Set The Rules Of Your Room

As a creator, you can create any environment you want -- you get to set the stage. You set the tone and the speed of the room.

When you create a Clubhouse room, it's crucial to understand what your goals and intentions are for that room.

Do you want to have a random conversation with no purpose? Do you want to make money or gain followers? Do you want to meet new people? Do you need help with a topic? Are you looking to hire team members?

Now, once you understand your room's purpose, it is essential to set the stage's rules.

How do you want people to interact with you and engage in the conversation?

Some moderators will invite every person in the audience to the stage to speak whenever they want. Others will ask people to raise their hand if they want to talk, give a brief 30-60 second intro, and ask one question.

No moderating style is wrong as long as you are respectful and your audience can understand what is going on.

If you have a club, you can set club rules that will require anyone to accept your set of rules before they can talk and engage in the conversation.

3. Be You + Show Your Personality

The best way to utilize Clubhouse is to be yourself - there is only one you!

Because Clubhouse is a voice-only app, it feels more intimate and creates the opportunity to have two-way conversations with people worldwide. And it allows people to get to know you on a more personal level, however deep you choose to get.

Try practicing your pitch or learning your voice.

Clubhouse is a great place to practice learning what lands with your audience and what doesn't. It's an opportunity for you to practice telling your story and talking about what you love.

People can feel inauthenticity, and people can sense when something isn't right, so play around until you figure out what feels best for you.

There are people on Clubhouse right now practicing their comedy skits and hosting comedy shows. So however you choose to use the platform, make sure you are true to who you are.

People follow speakers around on Clubhouse because they like what they hear and because a person is relatable to them.

Be relatable to other people and serve them first, and you will flourish on Clubhouse.

4. Appoint A Lead Mod Or Hire A Paid Pro Moderator

Having a backup mod is critical to a Clubhouse room but not required.

You don't have to worry about this if you already have a co-host or multiple co-hosts. Usually, a co-host of the room will take charge if the room's creator is kicked out of the room.

But think about it, if you get a phone call, or something happens, and you get kicked out of your room, what happens?

Who is in charge? Will your room still go on? Will your audience members come back?

These are all reasons why it's crucial to have a professional moderator or at least a friend in place at all times to guide your room if something happens or you have to step away.

Here's an easy way and probably one you are already doing to find a paid or pro moderator on Clubhouse.

Pay attention to the people speaking in the rooms you are already attending and note the speakers or moderators you like.

Once you take note of a person you like, ask them if they would like to host a room with you. 

The worst that can happen is they say no. 

If you want to have a better chance of them attending your room, try serving them first. Go to their rooms and support what they are doing and contribute. 

You can also search the bios of the people speaking on stage for the keywords 'paid moderator'. Many professional moderators will put that in their bios so they can get hired to moderate rooms.

Some people will also moderate rooms for people who want to grow their following on Clubhouse or make a new connection with someone important.

Remember, all Clubhouse bios are fully searchable for words and emojis!

5. Reset Your Room Periodically

Resetting your room means nothing more than giving everyone listening a quick refresh of what is going on in the room.

New people are entering your room all the time, and if someone has not been in your room since the beginning, they may not fully understand what is going on.

And there's nothing worse than entering a conversation in the middle or towards the end and feeling confused or left out.

So make sure you watch how fast your room is growing to make sure you serve and make the new people feel included as well.

  1. Tapping on 'All rooms' in the top left of your screen

  2. Look at the number in the bottom left-hand corner 

That number next to the faces tells you how many people are currently in your room. If that number keeps going up, it's essential to reset your room periodically.

How to reset your Clubhouse room:

To reset your Clubhouse room, all you do is notify everyone listening that you are doing a quick reset of the room and updating what is going on. 

There are a ton of ways someone can reset a Clubhouse room.

The goal is to find a style that fits your personality and also serves your audience. 

For example, some pro moderators will ask everyone to do a quick PTR (pull to refresh), tell everyone the room's topic, introduce major speakers, and ask people to share their Clubhouse room on Instagram to bring new people in the room.

Some moderators will even ask people in the audience to ping 2-5 new people into the room. 

It is imperative to reset your room every 10-13 minutes. 

It is also lovely to edify your top speakers, moderators, and audience members during this time to show appreciation back to them. It is also nice to call out your audience's names (I will talk about this point later)! 

6. Understand Clubhouse Etiquette

What is Clubhouse Etiquette?

Clubhouse etiquette is basically the unspoken rules of Clubhouse. Having clubhouse etiquette is merely being respectful of others and allowing them to voice their opinions just as you would in person.

Having good Clubhouse etiquette is when you speak with a pleasant tone, encourage healthy debates, allow others to speak, and have a diverse stage and audience.

Clubhouse etiquette also includes things like:

  • Waiting in the audience and listening for a moment before raising your hand to speak. This gives you time to get up to speed, and you will not have to ask a clarifying question and interrupt the energy of the room to ask what is going on.

  • Being ready to speak when you are called on. It is so rude and disruptive to the room when it is your turn to speak, and you are just sitting on stage, not paying attention. 

  • Using your stage time appropriately. Please don't use your stage time to pitch your product or service unless it is in a pitch room or the mods said it's okay. Use the space and energy of the room in the same way the creator of the room intended.

  • Mute yourself when you aren't talking or come on stage.
  • Having a brief intro that simply describes who you are and what you do. The ideal time for a Clubhouse intro is somewhere around 60 seconds. (Always say your name first and then explain).

  • Moving yourself back to the audience when you are finished speaking.

  • Leaving quietly when you are ready. Don't announce that you have to go unless you are one of the room's main speakers or moderators. There is a leave quietly button for a reason. Sometimes announcing that you are leaving the room is more of a disruption than the polite exit you intend. 

⭐ Pro Tip: Unmute and mute yourself before speaking

This is a non-verbal cue that lets other moderators and speakers on stage know that you have something you want to say - letting them know that you would like to speak next.  

This politely says, "Hey guys, I would love to speak soon! Add me to the line-up!"

Some people will also change their profile photo to let the host of the room know they would like to speak. This does not always mean that you will get to talk and say what you want to say at that moment, but try not to let that bother you.

If you are patient and wait your turn, you will get your opportunity to share your value with the people on stage and the audience.

7. Call Out Audience Members By Name

When you are the moderator of the room and are responsible for the room's energy, it's fun to call out the new people who enter the room to give them a warm welcome and make them feel seen as they walk into your room.

And who knows, maybe they will give you a follow!

You can also call out your expert moderators and speakers by name on stage or find any person in the audience.

Calling people out by name in the audience is a super cool trick that immediately captures your listeners' attention.

When people hear their name, it's been proven that it immediately captures their attention to prepare them for social interaction and creates an extremely positive experience for most.

People will wait to see if their name is called because they want to be ready.

To find your audience's names, look in the 'Followed by the speakers' section and in the 'Others in the room' section.

Mentioning people's names in your audience is also great to do when you are doing a reset of your room!

8. Keep The Conversation Flowing

When your room opens, it's pretty essential to have an ongoing conversation until the room closes.

When you first open up your room, it's important to start talking right away, especially if you already have people in your room.

People aren't going to stay in a room if no one is talking. What's the point in that?

An excellent way to keep the conversation flowing is to invite someone from the audience up to the stage to carry on a light conversation until your speakers join your room or until you are ready to get started.

If you find you are having a hard time keeping the conversation going or are looking for some fresh ideas, try these tips:

  • Ask your audience an engaging question and poll the answers (ask people to raise hands to poll the audience)

  • Invite speakers to stage and ask questions popcorn style

  • Host a Q&A style room

  • Host rapid fire questions (60 seconds or less)

  • Play music, meditation sounds, etc. in dead space or transitions

  • Host a conversation style room with one other person and shut it down once the convo is dead

And if you feel your conversation is at a point where it could wrap up or see the conversation is starting to get a little slow, you can simply close down the room and create another one later.

Some people greatly prefer rooms that have a set time limit.

For example, you could start a Clubhouse room and only host it for one hour, or you could start a Clubhouse room and host it for 24 hours.

You can schedule and plan it out or go with the room's flow and shut it down when you think it's time.

Suppose you are tired of moderating and don't feel like talking anymore. In that case, you could pass the moderation to another speaker in the room, especially if your audience is enjoying the conversation and is getting value.

9. Edify, Edify, Edify 

Anytime you are on Clubhouse, especially if you are the creator of a Clubhouse room, it is critical to complement and support other people on the app.

If someone comes on your stage and you like what they said, ask your audience members to follow and support them.

Many pro moderators will ask the audience to follow the other speakers and moderators and encourage them to buy their products and services or support their cause.

The goal is to make everyone in your room feel supported and seen.

Sometimes when you ask the audience to share your Clubhouse room on Instagram, you will have dozens or hundreds of people share it across their stories and news feed.

How could someone not want free engagement and edification?

Cross-promoting content across social media platforms and audiences is one of the fastest ways to grow organically, and it doesn't cost you a dime.

Adding speakers to your Instagram story is a simple trick that exposes you and other people to brand new audiences for free.

Here's an example of where someone posted a Clubhouse room to their Instagram story.

And as you can see, you can easily add another person's Instagram story or post to your profile by clicking 'Add This to Your Story.'

You can also give out rewards or unique gifts to people who share your room on their social media channels.

For example, if ten people screenshot your room and share it on Instagram, you could pick two people and give them a free book or coaching.

Other ways to edify people:

  • If you are invited to speak on stage, thank the moderator who brought you up and say something nice about them. 

  • Follow them on Clubhouse and turn on the bell so you can always join their rooms

  • Follow them across all social media platforms

  • Share their content to your social media

  • Tell other people about them (word of mouth is so powerful)

  • Support their cause however you can

  • Like and engage with their social media posts

Do this consistently, and you are guaranteed to stand out!

10. Manage The Stage

As a moderator, it is essential to keep your room in order.

When you are moderating a room, you can create whatever environment you want, so keep that in mind.

If people aren't doing what you ask, then simply remove them from the stage.

You want your listeners to be able to understand who is talking and the conversation at hand. If you have many people talking over each other, it can be difficult for people listening to follow along.

As the moderator, be mindful of other people's feelings and be respectful.

Here are a few tips to help you control or manage how your Clubhouse room operates.

  • Have a consistent moderating style for your room (Q&A style, popcorn style, going in order)

  • Stay on topic!
  • Only allow a certain number of speakers or moderators on your stage at once

  • Ask people to raise their hand to speak

  • Ask people to move themselves back to the audience

  • Tell people if they are not ready to speak, they can accept to speak later (click your face in the audience and choose 'Accept speaking invite' when you are ready)

  • Tell people to DM you their best tip or trick so you can share it with the room

  • Don't let people talk over each other

  • Remove, report, or block people who are disrespectful, unethical or don't respect the rules

  • Use the raised hands to poll and vote on discussions

  • Ask people to mute themselves when they come to the stage

11. Upgrade Your Clubhouse Audio

It's fun to think of your Clubhouse room as a show. You can use professional equipment to give yourself better audio quality, add-in sound effects, and even record podcasts. 

Many pro moderators on Clubhouse are using the Rodecaster Pro to add sound effects to their rooms and record directly out of Clubhouse. Then they are taking those recordings and using them as podcast episodes just like we are doing with our podcast Gary.club podcast.

Make sure you read about the recording rules before you ever record any Clubhouse conversation, so you don't violate the terms of service.

12. Collaborate 

When you are first starting on Clubhouse, try finding a few people you can collaborate with.

When you can get together with other people on Clubhouse, especially ones who are pretty seasoned and have large followings, you can grow rather quickly.

The speed of connectivity on this app is insane.

Many large influencers on Clubhouse are already collaborating and have started creating syndicates to band together to share their audiences and insights.

People are coordinating in back-channel What's app groups to schedule and coordinate rooms together.

Some seasoned moderators are even scheduling a weekly meeting to plan rooms and coordinate when everyone can attend.

Here's a question to think about, do you want to build a genuine relationship or pull out your credit card and pay Facebook, Instagram, or a social media platform?

Paid advertising is great, and you should also use it, but don't dismiss the power of collaborating with people.

When you use both paid advertising and collaboration in the real world with real people, you will flourish quicker than most.

13. Respectfully End Your Room

This one is pretty simple. Don't just abruptly end your Clubhouse room.

Some creators and moderators are counting down from 10 to give everyone in the room a moment to say goodbye or leave or allow another moderator to take over.

Some mods are even bringing up people to tell a joke or do a laughing exercise to leave everyone in an uplifted spirit before they close it down.

It doesn't matter what you do as long as you give everyone in the room a little notice that the room will be shutting down.
