What Is Threads App?

If you've been on social media or have watched the news lately, it's likely you've probably heard about the hot new social media app Threads, which is a new app built by Instagram.

So, if you're like me, you might wonder what the new Threads app is about.

And you know it must be pretty important when CNN is blogging about it on the news.

Key Takeaways:

  • Threads is a new app built by Instagram that launched on July 5, 2023.

  • Threads is a text-based app built for sharing text updates and joining public discussions

  • You log into Threads using your Instagram account, and posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, animated carousels, photos (even panoramic photos), and videos up to 5 minutes in length.

What Is Threads?

Threads is a new social media app that was built by the Instagram team for sharing text updates and joining public conversations.

Just like on Instagram, with Threads, you can follow and connect with creators and friends who share your same interests--including the same people you already follow on Instagram.

According to the Threads app, your Threads feed is a mix of threads posted by other people you follow and recommended content from new creators you haven't discovered yet.

Down the road, the Threads team hopes to make recommendations more personalized, and they definitely plan on adding a chronological feed just like on Facebook.

how does the threads app work?

Currently, there are a ton of basics that are missing from the new Threads app, like search, hashtags, a following feed, graph synching, fedeverse support, and messaging.

Will the Threads app add these features in the future?

The head of Instagram says, "full disclosure, it'll take time."

How Many Users Are On The Threads App?

Threads app reaches 100+ million users faster than ChatGPT, TikTok, And Instagram.

While the new Threads app is being called a "copycat version of Twitter," it is the fastest-growing app ever to reach one million users.

As of writing this blog post, there are over 102+ million users on the Threads app, and those numbers are rapidly growing.

You can check the number of Threads users anytime here

How To Sign Up For Threads

Note: The Threads app is not yet available for everyone.

Since Threads is an extension of the Instagram app, you must have an Instagram account to be able to create a Threads profile.

But if you already have an Instagram account, it's super simple and will probably take you about 30 seconds to create your Threads account and profile.

You can always set up your Threads profile later.

How To Find The Threads App In The App Store

If you want to download the popular Threads app, simply open the App Store on your iPhone and type "threads" into the search bar.

Then click on "thread, an Instagram app" and click download.

The Threads app is also trending at #1 in the App Store and is currently listed under the "Top Free Apps" section.

When you download the Threads app in the app store, you get to:

  • Keep your Instagram username

  • Find your followers

  • Connect over conversation

  • Share your point of view

It's important to note when you sign up for the Threads app, your Instagram username will automatically transfer over.

You cannot change this. The only way to get a new or different Threads username is to create a new Instagram account using a different username.

Also, during the setup process, you have the option to invite all of your Instagram followers to follow you on the Threads app.

You can invite your entire Instagram following to follow you on Threads with one click. This can give new Threaders an advantage, especially if they already have a large following on the Instagram app.

If you don't want to invite your Instagram followers, you can select no and build your Threads account from scratch.

By not importing your followers to Threads, you can curate a following of new people you want to build relationships with and engage with.

The choice is yours.

How To Use Threads App

Since I've been using the Threads app, I have learned a few user-friendly tips and tricks that I have to share with you.

Here are some of the top tips and tricks I've learned while using Threads, an Instagram app.

After you create your Threads account, you want to:

  • Create a bio and optimize your profile picture

  • Add a link to your profile

  • Choose whether you will have a "Private Profile" or "Public Profile"

  • Take a look at your "Settings" and make sure everything is the way you like it

  • Write and post your first thread

  • Follow your friends, favorite brands, and other users you want to connect with

A great place when you are getting started on threads is to connect with people you already know from other social media platforms and from real life.

One of the first things you want to do after you have downloaded the Threads app is get your Threads profile optimized and set up so people will want to follow and interact with you.

No one wants to follow someone who has never posted or looks like a creep.

How to setup your bio on Threads app

The next thing you want to do is to get threading!

Make sure you post a new thread to your Threads profile so people can start seeing your personality and what you offer.

Here's an example of one of the threads I posted on my Threads profile.

how to write a thread

How To Start A New Thread

  1. Tap icon in the center of the Threads app

  2. Write your new threads

  3. Tap "return" three times

  4. Repeat as many times as you want

After you start a thread and are ready to add a new thread to continue the discussion underneath, simply tap the "return" button on your keyboard three times to automatically start your next thread.

Here's a short video to show you what I am referring to.

This simple trick saves so much time when writing threads discussions on the Threads app.

You can also easily share any Threads posts directly to your Instagram story.

When you go to share your thread to your Instagram story or as a post on your Instagram page, Threads automatically creates a cool image and background for your post.

Cool Threads Features

Now let's take a look at some cool features on the Threads app.

Right off the bat, one of the first things I noticed while using the Threads app is every Threads profile has two tabs.

how to find replies on threads

Every Threads profile has a:

  1. Threads tab: In this tab, you will find all original threads this brand or person has created and/or any threads they have reposted from other users.

  2. Replies tab: The replies tab shows every discussion and all replies this profile/user has participated in on the Threads app.

Looking at the replies section on the Threads app is one of the best ways to find insights, join interesting conversations, and see who your favorite brands, creators, and friends are most engaging with on the app.

I believe this is a game changer if you are trying to build new relationships, grow your Threads account, and/or join discussions that you are passionate about.

The Power Of Search On Threads

Another interesting thing I noticed while using the Threads app is you can not only search for businesses and people, but you can also search for specific keywords in the search bar.

For example, if you type โ€œyogaโ€ in the search bar, then a list of Threads profiles will appear who have that same keyword or term in their bio.

how to create a threads bio

So it may be smart to add specific keywords to your Threads bio related to your brand and targeted towards your ideal audience.

Research and add keywords your audience is already searching for in your Threads bio.

To Allow @Mentions, Or Not To Allow @Mentions

Another cool and important feature is you get to choose who can tag or mention you in threads and on the Threads app.

Hereโ€™s the cost and why it might be worth looking into these settings.

If people canโ€™t tag you in threads or add you to conversations you arenโ€™t a part of, then that can potentially greatly limit your reach and exposure on the Threads app.

Common Threads Questions

The CEO of @Instagram, Adam Mosseri, posts frequent content addressing new users' common questions regarding the new Threads app.

For example, there have been many questions about deleting your Threads account, and if you go to delete your Threads account, it will also delete your Instagram account and profile.

Which does seem confusing.

Mosseri (the head of Instagram) addressed these issues, and here is how he responded to deleting your Threads account.

He says, "To clarify, you can deactivate your Threads accounts, which hides your Threads profile and content, you can set your profile to private, and you can delete individual threads posts -- all without letting your Instagram account. Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now, it's just one account, but we are looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately."

if I delete threads app will it delete my Instagram app?

If you want to deactivate your Threads account for any reason, you can follow the steps below to deactivate your Threads profile.

How To Deactivate Your Threads Profile

*Note: Since Instagram powers Threads, you will have to delete your Instagram account to permanently delete your Threads profile and data.

  1. Tap profile in the bottom right to go to your profile.

  2. Tap settings in the top right.

  3. Tap account Account, then tap Deactivate profile.

  4. Tap Deactivate Threads profile, then confirm your choice.

You can only deactivate your profile once a week.

According to the Instagram Help Center, by deactivating your Threads profile, you hide your profile and content from being visible on Threads.

You also have the option to delete individual posts โ€“ all without deleting your Instagram account. But if you want to delete your Threads account and completely get rid of it, you also have to delete your Instagram account.

Instagram says they are looking into a way to delete your Threads profile separately from your Instagram account.

Final Thoughts

The launch of a new social media app is always exciting for content creators, especially creators who want to get into an app early.

What Meta and the team at Instagram have been able to accomplish with the new Threads app shows the importance and power of consistently building your audience and brand for years and proves there is no such thing as reaching too many people.

There are many lessons that can be learned from this. There is so much opportunity for creators who get into this app early and put in the work to learn how to use this app and build connections, and have discussions in the way it was built for.

I believe the Threads app will build the next wave of billionaires, and the ones who put in the work early and stay consistent will reap the benefits.

I hope you were able to find value and enjoyed reading this blog post!
